Special Categories of Workers

There are several categories which have their own set of requirements. Foreign workers must still have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer to meet ther general requirements.
Below is a list of those special categories.


Information Technology Workers
Foreign workers who receive a job offer from a Canadian employer under any one of the following do not need to receive a Labour Market Opinion and may have their work permit applications processed much quicker.
  • Senior Animation Effects Editor
  • Embedded Systems Software Designer
  • MIS Software Designer
  • Multimedia Software Developer
  • Software Developer—Services
  • Software Products Developer
  • Telecommunications Software Designer

Live-In Caregivers
The program's goal is to bring qualified caregivers to work in Canada to as live-in nannies and caregivers. There is currently a shortage of these types of workers in Canada.

Business People
Certain free trade agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) allows business people from certain countries to obtain work permits. These workers do not require a Labour Market Opinion.
